Showcase Teacher: Kirsten Shelby!

Kirsten Shelby is part of the Fifth Grade Team at Sommer Elementary. Ms. Shelby places high value on reaching her students where they are and has found that integrating technology into lessons can make a lesson more real for her students. She is excited about learning new ways to use technology in her classroom!

Here are a few ways that she uses technology:

  • Research projects in Social Studies and Science
  • Math online resources
  • Interactive Social Studies game
  • Promethean Board
  • ActiVotes
  • Online resources to complete a vacation project
  • Powerpoint
  • Word
What is a favorite lesson that you do that incorporates technology?
I enjoy using a Social Studies website that allows the students to become the leader of a colony and make decisions to try and make their colony survive. At the end of the decision making, the students find out if their colony made it or not. The students get so into it without realizing they're learning. It's fun to see them want to do it again and make different and better decisions to help their colony.

What is the one instructional technology that you feel you could no longer live without?
The computer

If wishes could come true, what technology would you want to have available in your classroom to enhance instruction?
Ipads for all students

What are your thoughts on using technology in the classroom as part of instruction?
I'm really enjoying learning to use the Promethean Board with students. It's awesome!
