In the Fifth Grade classrooms, Mrs. Picha, Mrs. Shelby, and Mrs. Braun are using the class slates in math problem solving lessons. Students took turns showing their strategy for solving problems on groups of numbers. The student answered questions about their strategy after they demonstrated what they had drawn using the slate. The class discussed whether this strategy would work every time or just in this situation. Another student talked through the standard algorithm and a third student demonstrated creating equal groups. The class discussed that with bigger numbers it might take longer but that it would always work. The teacher then used the slate to demonstrate a strategy that she wanted them all to try.
